Never join you in the dark with your own power from your home battery
Panels still capture sunlight during a power outage. This can also be processed into power, but the inverter does not send the power into the grid. The reason for this is logical. When a power outage occurs, a technician must locate and repair the problem. If solar panels continue to send power to the grid at the same time, this can cause the technician to become live. That doesn’t make the repair any smoother. Therefore, when voltage fails, the inverter automatically shuts down. There is, of course, a solution to this. If you have a home battery installed, the power can be kept in the home with an EPS feature. This detects power outages and can then switch the inverter so that it is no longer directly connected to the grid.
Power failure detection with an EPS box
So home batteries can also function as an emergency power supply. That means if the power grid goes down, you can still use energy stored in your home battery. Using an optional EPS feature, power outages can be detected and the inverter will switch so that it is no longer connected directly to the grid, but only to the battery and your specifically chosen consumers in the home that you want to continue to power in that case. All that in a few milliseconds!
How that works technically
An EPS box (also Automatic Transfer Switch) is a switch that automatically switches to the connected emergency power supply when the mains power fails. It is a necessary protection switch if an emergency power supply is connected to an inverter. In the meter box, the output of the EPS box, is connected to certain groups where you need power in case of power failure. The EPS box can often still provide enough power to power a washing machine and kitchen, for example!
In this process, the EPS-Box controls the switching of contactors (devices that make and break electrical circuits) to provide power to the linked groups in the meter box. Is power coming back on the grid? Then the EPS box often switches back automatically.
